A and X - A love story in letters by John Berger
Is it possible to maintain a form of presence in the life of a lover through the magic of words alone, while strengthening one's own power to resist violence and oppression? John Berger - the “radical humanist” as Hollywood star Tilda Swinton calls him - explores this question in his epistolary novel A and X. A piece of literature of incredible poetic and political power. Dorothea Steinbauer's adaptation deliberately presents the love story, which seems to tell only one side, on a small scale. Berger's sensitive power can unfold in an intimate atmosphere, allowing the full scope of the story to be felt.
“... Hope is something to bite into, something you can put between your teeth. With hope between your teeth grows the strength to carry on, even if the tiredness never subsides; grows the strength, if necessary, not to scream at the wrong moment, grows above all the strength not to cry...” (John Berger)
